When Sexuality and Politics Collide
The sexually adventurous in the US are at risk because of the current political landscape.
This post was inevitable. My audience here spans a wide spectrum of people interested in various aspects of sexuality and relationships, but the preponderance of my readers tend to lean heavily into the more adventurous realms of those experiences. That means they often dance at the edges of acceptability and societal norms.
Many who read this newsletter also fall into marginalized groups such as LGBTQ, or BIPOC.
Taken together, a large percentage of my American reading audience is currently at higher risk.
As a result of pushing against the banal landscape of repressive attitudes about sex and relationships, and the identities and cultures in which those attempt to thrive, it feels like it’s impossible to separate sex and relationships from the political. Perhaps that’s always the case, but right now it feels especially dire in the US.
So, this is my pitch for my readers to get involved more politically. I know, politics isn’t as fun a topic as sex and relationships. But the truth is that if our country devolves into an authoritarian nightmare which it appears to be heading toward, all but the most mainstream of sexual and relationship expressions will be squelched.
If you don’t think the sexually adventurous are at risk, please study the authoritarian regimes that have popped up throughout history and you’ll notice repression of the different always at the core of their installation of power, and attacking sex, sexual orientation, and adventurous sexual or relationship explorations of any kind are easy targets.
What can you do? I’m going to point you to an article I wrote on my Medium page that I’ve been updating since first posting it – “Citizen Power: Turning Advocacy Into Impact.” This article will give you some ideas on how you can advocate for democracy and freedom. That’s good for the country, but it’s also good for the subset of people who regularly read this newsletter.
